National Cancer Prevention Month

This time of year is always special for us, and it’s not just because of the excitement of starting a new year. February is National Cancer Prevention Month, which is a cause we think truly worthy of trumpeting. While cancer treatment methods have made astounding progress in the last few decades, cancer is still an extremely serious condition – and without a doubt, the best way to beat cancer is through preventative measures like regular screenings and a healthy lifestyle. This February, we encourage you to think about the steps you can take in your own life to get ahead of cancer and how you can help those you love to do the same – or, if you know someone currently battling cancer, how you can lend them support.

Screen Early, Screen Often

Cancer is always a serious condition to be diagnosed with, but the early it’s spotted and diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. The best strategy for fighting cancer is to begin before you even start fighting. Regular, preventative screenings are the best way to find and fight almost any cancer in the body, and many health insurance policies cover these preventative screenings at little to no cost. For full details on how to protect yourself, check out the American Cancer Society’s guidelines for early cancer detection.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Outside of regular screenings, keeping a healthy diet and an active lifestyle is one of the best ways to ward off cancer. New research estimates that up to one-third of all cancer cases are preventable through diet, exercise, and healthy weight management. Getting regular screenings is critical, but flat-out prevention is better than early detection – and that means maintaining a healthy lifestyle through diet, activity, and weight management is your best bet at beating cancer.
