What Is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is the abnormal growth of cells within the prostate. Prostates are only found in males, meaning this is a cancer that does not affect women. Prostate cancer is typically seen in older men and is rare before the age of 40. Prostate cancer is fairly common; approximately 1 in 7 men will have prostate cancer in their life. In the last few decades, prostate cancer treatment options have improved and the survival rate has risen drastically. Prostate cancer screening is available, which can help diagnose the cancer while in its early stages, making it easier to treat.

The CyberKnife System is the most advanced technology in the field of radiation therapy. CyberKnife is a form of treatment that features highly targeted radiation delivered with extreme precision. It targets cancerous tumors, as well as cells, and it can track cancerous cells during the treatment. CyberKnife is a form of stereotactic radiosurgery with less limitations in terms of the angles and locations the radiation can reach and target.

CyberKnife has extremely high precision that sets it apart from other types of radiotherapy.

CyberKnife is ideal for treating prostate cancer because of its accuracy, targeting in sub-millimeter increments, and its ability to administer radiation to the tumor while minimizing exposure the nearby areas. The CyberKnife System can track the tumors movement during treatment which ensures the tumor is properly targeted and helps to reduce side effects.

The Phoenix CyberKnife and Oncology Center is one of a few western CyberKnife locations in the United States. It offers CyberKnife technology, as well as TrueBeam STx and HDR Brachytherapy, to Arizona and its surrounding areas. The team consists of board-certified radiation oncologists and a qualified staff that will help determine the best course of treatment and help you through the process.

The process begins with a consultation with one of our radiation oncologists. If CyberKnife is determined to be the best treatment, a pre-treatment implant will be performed. The next step is imaging which allows the doctor to determine a dosage plan. Once this is done, treatment sessions can begin.
